Gerhard Gilke

CEO

After completing his electronics studies, Gerhard Gilke embarked on his professional journey in 1975 as a Service Engineer DACH and later as a Service Manager at Compugraphic, a U.S. manufacturer of computerized photosetting systems. During this period, information technology had already made its way into the newspaper and publishing industry. In the 1980s, he spent several years in the United States, where he opened sales channels for two German IT companies, promoting their IBM-compatible protocol converters and peripheral devices. It was during this time that he first encountered broadband networks and the predecessors of today’s internet. In 1985, while on the campus of a research institution affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he was introduced to a “Wide Area Network” (WAN). This network connected multiple IBM mainframes with a variety of individual workstations that communicated with each other using different protocols such as ARCnet and Ethernet, achieving high transmission speeds of several hundred kilobits per second. This laid the foundation for open, vendor-independent networks that facilitated real-time connections between participants at regional, national, and international locations, utilizing various cabling structures and non-proprietary hardware technologies. In the late 1980s, he returned to Germany, remaining dedicated to the industry and taking on leadership roles in European high-tech development companies. In 2008, he founded ANPEQ GmbH, a wholesale company specializing in opto-technical network components. He majority-sold the company to a British cable manufacturer in Manchester in 2010. In 2012, he left ANPEQ and established AXESS Networks. In 2020, following the entry of another partner, it became AXESS Networks GmbH. On December 31, 2022, at the age of 70, he left the company to retire. However, he had a change of heart: “Stopping now and leaving my groundwork and developments to others doesn’t make sense. I still have a few years left!” – This is his credo. In May 2023, he co-founded MULTIMEDIA Axess GmbH in Bad Berneck with young network experts from Munich.
